Wordpress Blogging – What is a Permalink?

A permalink is a piece of code that you can add to your blog to create user friendly URLs for your blog posts.

Now, it is not possible to change the URL of a blog post on just any blogging platform. On a Wordpress Blog it is not only possible, it is also extremely easy to do.

The Wordpress.org software platform enables you, the blogger, to have a self-hosted blog.

Wordpress Blogging  – Why do I Need A Self-Hosted Blog?

The benefit of having a self-hosted blog is that you have complete control of your blog. You control how your blog looks with your choice of theme and you can choose a domain name (URL) that is search engine optimized.

Another benefit of a self-hosted blog is that you control your content and you own your content because it is on your own server and not on someone else’s server. Your blog can never be shut down without your knowledge or approval.

So back to permalinks, after a short digression to Wordpress.

So when you use a Wordpress.org blog you can change the permalink structure to anything you choose. Within the Wordpress software there are a couple of standard permalink options.

Wordpress Blogging

With most Wordpress themes, you’ll find that there is a footer that displays at the bottom of each page of the theme.  This footer typically goes back to either the developer of the themes page, or the place where you downloaded the theme from.

In the how to video below, I’m going to show you a quick blog tip on how to modify, or remove this footer in your Wordpress blog in a couple easy steps.

Be sure to use your footer text wisely, in that you want to optimize the text you place in it using your main keywords/phrases.

And you may even want to consider making the footer a link to a free report, or other offer to invite subscribers to take advantage of the information you have to offer.

What’s your vision? What will you blog about and who will you blog to?

Having a clear and concise “picture” of what your blogging goals and purpose are, is critical to your long-term success.

Set the intention of your blog before you do anything else. Once you know why you are blogging it will be much easier to decide on the look of your blog (your theme) and the style of your blog (casual, formal or somewhere in between). Decide who your target audience is and then it is much easier to decide on content as well.
